For those people who are claiming that Chick-Fil-A is lobbying to deny the basic human rights of one of America’s largest minorities not out of hate, but rather because ‘As Christians, that’s just what they believe,’ your argument is akin to saying that if the Nazis had attempted to exterminate the world’s Jewish population because of something they read in the Bible that they honestly believed was both god’s will and the right thing to do, rather than out of pure antisemitism, that it would no longer be an act of hatred. I understand that this is an extreme example, and am in no way comparing the gay marriage debate to the holocaust, but the logic of the argument is along the exact same lines. The 9/11 hijackers honestly believed they were doing god’s will when they wantonly murdered thousands people. Their piousness did not negate the fact that this was an act of unadulterated hate. Using the violent force of government to deny the basic human rights of any group of people is an act of hate whether it is justified by scripture or pure, old-fashioned racism.
